Ice storm, 03 December 2007

seed pods of mountain laurel

Not so happy with this image. Was very difficult to get the focus right and the gap in the ice on the seed heads reflected the light rather fiercely. The ice on the lower right covering the leaf was the detail I sought, but that ended up blowing out and losing the focus for the seed heads. Live and learn to use a friggin tripod so I can ramp down the stupid aperture. Or maybe just sCRAP it.

Lovely! I like the way your use of depth of field makes the ice pop out of the photo.

don't scrap it, rachel.......i think you are being to hard on yourself......the opaque nature of ice sort of dictate some lack of focus

i, for one, think this is brilliant

... nice shot!!!

Well, I have taken a second look at it. And actually was a bit shocked. It really is sharper than I thought... the focal plane on the seedheads is a bit below the surface, but it is just right for the very intricately detailed pattern on the leaf ice. So the focus really isn't as bad as I thought.

Thanks. It was a struggle focusing, and I was unhappy at first. But a closer inspection reveals I did better than I thought!

Actually, there is a nice focal plane in this one. I had to look closer at it. Part of the trouble is the layers of ice.
